Five largest cities and their populations in Jamaica
Kingston - 579,000
New Kingston - 289,500
Spanish Town - 193,000
Portmore - 144,750
Montego Bay - 115,800
Actual
New Kingston - 583,000
Spanish Town - 145,000
Portmore - 103,000
Montego Bay - 83,000
Explanation of Rank-Size rule accuracy: After comparing the populations of Jamaica's 2nd-5th largest cities using the rank-size rule and using the actual populations, it is obvious that rank-size rule is not applicable in Jamaica. Although the populations of Spanish Town, Portmore and Montego bay are relatively close to being accurate with the rank size rule, the city of New Kingston is practically the size of the largest city. A more accurate model to represent Jamaica's cities is the binary rank rule, where there are two cities that overwhelm the rest. Furthermore, because of Jamaica's relatively small size, the majority of cities are clustered in the South section of the island forming a small scale megalopolis.
